Three months ago, I lost my Bernese Mountain Dog, Bear. As I carried him out of our home, wrapped in his favourite blankets, it hit me... this was the last time I'd feel the weight of him.
And already, in that moment, I was thinking about what I'd have left.
Not hundreds of photos. I was always terrible at remembering to take them! I was too busy actually being with him, I told myself.
So what I have now is mostly memory. And memory fades. A few days after we lost him, my mum came to check on me, and at some point I reached out with empty hands (literally) and told her I wanted something to hold. Something that proved we had really lived.
I didn't have it.
I wished I had made something.
He deserved a bigger world, and I deserved something real to hold onto.
But there's Betsy, my basset hound. And with her, I'm doing it differently. We're already exploring new places, capturing it properly this time. Building something real I won't lose to time and faded memories.
That's why I'm building Marra. Not because I want to move on from Bear, but because I can't bear the thought of anyone else reaching out with empty hands the way I did.
